AbstractThe hydraulic properties of porous media are bubbling pressure, residual saturation, pore-size distribution index, hydraulic conductivity variation index and saturated hydraulic conductivity. There are many methods to determine these properties. One of which is commonly used is the steady flow method. This method is, however, laborous and time-consuming. In this study, an unsteady flow method, which is considered to be simpler and faster was developed. In this method, unsteady flow equations developed from a capillary tube model and numerical ยท solutions obtained from the differential equation for one dimensional drainage were used to find the theoretical time-cumulative outflow curves. The theoretical curves were then used to calibrate the hydraulic properties by comparing with experimental curves obtained from other investigations and in this study. Results indicated that the values of the properties obtained from the proposed method were sufficiently close to those obtained from the existing steady flow method except for the values of pore-size distribution index and hydraulic conductivity variation index. However, improvement could be made by more careful predetermination of the properties in the laboratory in order to select appropriate ranges and spacings of the values for the calibration.
