| Abstract | The objective of this study is to analyze the economic impact of growth centre Surabaya on surrounding rural areas in order to find out which kind of impact it has and whether Surabaya has served the functions of the growth centre or not. Multiplier Analysis is used to measure the economic impact of the growth centre. This impact occurs via the spending of various sectors on wages and salaries, raw materials, utilities, overheads and others; and via the spending of urban residents and villagers on food, clothing, etc. Another way of looking into the economic impact of the growth centre is by calculating this impact from income generated by each subject sample through its spending patterns. The conclusion of the findings is that the impact of sectors is very small, the multiplier effect by the urban resident spending shows significant figure and the impacts do not occur correspondingly to the distance from the city and it seems that the highest impact in rural areas occurs in the Sidoarjo Regency. It is recommended to promote agro- industry, diversification of industry, to improve facilities and infrastructure for raising productivity of land and urbanization intern of the drain of people to urban area should be avoided but the commuting pattern of work can be encouraged. Since the social impacts are not included in this study, it is recommended to include such aspect for further research. Also the study can be extended to investigate how much is ·actually the growth pole Surabaya performs its role as a growth pole on the region. |
