AbstractThis is an explorative study on the position of rural women and their productive efforts in terms of money and time. The survey is carried out during February to April, 1976, in Kedah, Malaysia. Eight Equality indices and Attitude indices of women towards equality are constructed on the basis of simple unwieghted scores. The contribution of rural women are measured in terms of money and time, for both including and excluding housework. to these activities performed. Imputed wages are then assigned All the indices are expressed as the share of the wife to the sum of the wife and the husband, Finally, simple linear regression analysis is applied to see the relationships between women's contribution, equality and other related variables. It is found out that the correlation between these variables are negligibly small. Thus, it is recommended that improvement of the economic and social situation of BOTH MEN AND WOMEN in rural areas is necessary, but NOT simply seek for equality between them.
