| Abstract | Two ordering decision rules, the proportional control (P,T) and the proportional-integral (PI,T) decision rules which are designed from the controlling principles of the servomechanism , are applied to a hypothetical multi-echelon inventory system (MEIS). This MEIS consists of 5 stocking points in 3 echelons. Demands which are gamma distributed for each period occur at the first echelon only. Goods and information flows between echelons are incorporated with gamma distributed delays. In addition, customers impatience is also imbedded in the model. Cost components considered include shortage cost, inventory holding cost and procurement cost. Simulation is used to study the performance of the MEIS in terms of total cost and service level for the two decision rules mentioned above and the periodic (s ,T) decision rule which is widely used f or inventory system of single echelon. Other analytical items include sensitivity analysis and inventory transient response due to a step change in the expected demand. It is found that the (S,T) decision rule is generally stable, in view of its short fluctuation cycle and low inventory peak, for multi echelon inventory application. It also yields fairly high service level and low cost . On the other hand, both (P,T) and (PI,T) decision rules generally exhibit long fluctuation cycles and high inventory peak. However, both possess the ability to stock inventory in accordance with prevailing demand. In addition, (P,T) rule usual l y provides high service level and thereby high operating cost, whereas the (PI ,T) decision rule gives comparatively high service level and low cost. |
