| Abstract | This research is concerned with the design of a production plan for an existing pencil industry and at the same time find out the size of expansion necessary to meet anticipated demand at a minimum cost. A linear programming model was used for the intended optimization. The study period is from 1974 to 1980, and the demand was forecasted by multiple linear regression analysis using past records and other economic parameters. Based upon the capacities of different machines in the existing plant, two expansion plans were proposed and the incremental fixed costs, maximum capacities, unit costs of production were also evaluated. The model was run for four cases: one shift, two shifts and three shifts as well as one shift plus overtime operation for the existing plant, expansion plan 1 and expansion plan 2; and the results were compared to get the alternative which give the minimum cost over the study period. |
