| Abstract | This study concerns a production scheduling problem in the foundry of the Chonburi Casting and Machine Work Company. The Company produces nine casting products, which contain a total of forty seven parts. First, a demand forecast for each of the products is made. These forecasts are then used to determine the number of parts to be produced each month. After giving some margin for defective items, which are assumed to follow Poisson distribution, these parts are allocated to workers to make the necessary molds either with automatic machines or manually. Priorities for making these molds are fixed according to the time required for the subsequent finishing operation. In other words, for each product, the part with the longest finishing operation time will be cast first, and so on down to the part with the shortest time, after which the whole operation starts again. This cyclic pattern is continued on a day to day basis for one month. This arrangement facilitates the final assembly of the products, as the casting of most parts is finished at almost the same time. A simulation model is then developed. Each run determines gross prof it for all the possibilities involving three parameters: the alternatives of the furnaces ' use, the number of workers using automatic mold-making machines and the number of workers using manual methods. Each parameter contains a set of values. Based on these parameters, three criteria are established as an approach to determine the optimal values corresponding to maximum gross profit. An optimal pol icy is then suggested. |
