AbstractThe wastewater characteristics of a jute mill and its treatment alternatives were studied. Main sources of wastes arose from domestic sewage and dyeing operations. Daily discharge of domestic wastewater was 40 times that of dyeing wastewater which contained high COD (but low BOD6 ) and was highly coloured. Jar tests on dyeing wastewater (COD about 800 mg/l) showed that 60% COD can be removed at pH of 8.5 and dosage of 500 mg/l. Colour removal was good. Batch biological treatability showed that combined domestic and lime-treated wastewater was most susceptible to biological degradation. Subsequent continuous-flow biological treatment studies, namely activated sludge process, aerated lagoon and aerobic pond, on this combined waste indicated that all three methods could be successfully employed. However, aerobic pond was most economical and was recommended. Aerobic ponds at loading of 180 x 10-4 kg COD/m2 per day (160 lb/acre per day) gave a COD (total) removal of about 67% (total effluent COD ~ 85 mg/l, S.S. ~ 50 mg/l).
