AbstractThis research was carried out for investigating the various parameters involved in water softening by ion exchange for industrial use. It was aimed at to study those variables which influence the economics of this process. Two synthetic cation exchange resins of ROHM & HAAS COMPANY viz. Amberlite 200 and Amberlite IR-120 were used. A laboratory model was designed for this research. The parameters, concentration, contact time and flow of the regenerant, raw water flow rate, pH, resin bed depth, and hardness and turbidity, iron and manganese content of the influent raw water were investigated. According to the findings in this research, the exchange capacity of an exhausted resin increases on regeneration with brine up to about 15% concentration. The same pattern is shown with the increasing contact time of regenerant but it being less obvious after 80 minutes. The increase in flow rate of regenerant and of raw water decreases the exchange capacity. It increases slightly with the pH in the alkaline range. The increase in bed depth of resin and hardness of raw water decreases the exchange capacity of resins. Upto about 200 units of turbidity (suspension), the loss of softening capacity is insignificant. However, with natural turbid waters, this may not be relevant. The same decreasing pattern of exchange capacity occurred with increasing amounts of iron and manganese. The percentage removal of manganese by resin bed is considerably more than the iron.
