AbstractIn Taiwan, most of the efforts have been concentrated on the promotion of industrial development in the past two decades. Thus, high economic growth rate increased per capita income were achieved simultaneously with urbanization and industrialization. But the rate of environmental deterioration parallels that of economic growth. Especially the deterioration of water quality became very serious in consequence of indecision in the past. According to one of the recent government policies, a large amount of annual expenditures will be allocated to the development of public housing projects. One of the necessary requirements in the planning of future public housing projects is the prevention of pollution problems which happened before. It is the main objective of this research to develop a sewerage planning and design system which can be used in most of the future public housing projects excluding large scale of metropolitan areas in Taiwan. This research on the evaluation of sewage collection and treatment schemes for housing areas in Taiwan is divided into two main parts. First, the evaluation of the existing sewerage system to find the deficiencies of the present system used in Taiwan now. Secondly, a case study of the planning of Linkou New Town sewerage system in which a suitable and workable system was developed based on local conditions and the necessary considerations of simplicity, effectiveness, cost and ease of handling. So it contains a review of what have been done in Taiwan in the matter of environmental sewerage system with rapid urbanization and the ways of protection of our rivers against pollution. It also reviews the outlook on sewerage system planning, design and construction in future housing projects. The most desired intention is to focus on how to reduce the necessary engineering construction cost to a minimum possible level to meet the target of low cost sewage treatment for future housing development with clean environment.
