AbstractThe study reported herein is concerned with a specific energy conservation problem in the Kaohsiung Refinery of the Chinese Petroleum Corp., Taiwan, Republic of China. It deals specifically with the problem as how t o arrange the operation of eight boilers, which are supplying 225 psig steam to 33 refining units, so that the total fuel oil consumption rate will be minimized while the total steam output still meets the total requirement of those refining units. The steam supply system in the refinery is first studied and the operating characteristics of each of the boilers in t he system is also investigated. By using the cost function of each boiler, the problem is formulated into a quantitative model. The model is then solved by applying the dynamic programming approach and final results are obtained by using digital computer. The computer program is flexible enough t o take care of the situation in which a boiler or some of the boiler s are out of operation. Two tables are the final results of the computation and they can be used directly in the existing steam supply system in the refinery. Ten cases, which are most likely to happen in the refining operation, are presented to show the application of these results. In addition, a typical example is presented t o show the significant saving of fuel oil consumption by applying these results.
