AbstractThis research was concerned with the in-situ undrained strength characteristics 6f Nong Ngoo Hao Clay (0-15 m) . A review of the existing data on the undrained strength characteristics was made. Series of unconfined compression and triaxial tests were performed to measure the undrained-strength and strength parameters. Short series of tests were carried out to-study the effect of various factors on undrained strength measurements in the laboratory. Using the available undrained strength data, stability analysis of the Nong Ngoo Hao trial embankment and excavation were carried out. The results of this investigation showed that the total stress stability analysis of embankments on this clay may be carried out using the UU triaxial strength data as it represented most closely the 'true' undrained strength behaviour in comparison to other tests. The excavations in this clay mar offer a problem of long-term stability and effective stress analysis using strength parameters from CKoU or CKoD tests may be conducted.
