AbstractThere were two purposes of this research: (1) to verify that there is no significant effect of boundary proximity on piezometer response· and (2) to investigate the time-response piezometric behaviour of small (4-in. diameter by 8-in. high) clay specimens after consolidation. For the study of boundary effects, experiments were conducted on 12-in. diameter by 24-in. high clay specimens using six cylindrical piezometers of differing sizes and length/diameter ratios; three measuring systems were employed. It was found that boundary conditions for normal response tests in the laboratory had no significant effect on the shape factor of piezometer systems. The coefficient of permeability deduced from the time response tests, based on Gibson's theory, is reliable. The coefficient of consolidation depends upon soil properties and the shape of the piezometer; the values found were nearly the same as those from one-dimensional oedometer tests.
