AbstractA simple model is proposed to describe the effect of a river on the sea water motion. The empirical formula which gives the relationship between the flow rate and the water level difference for steady flows is examined for unsteady flows , by experiments where the unsteadiness of flows is indicated quantitatively by a newly introduced parameter. Furthermore, a method is given to apply the above-mentioned formula to numerical computations of the sea water motions in t he vicinity of river mouths. By employing this method, the analysis of river water motion is excluded from this problem and, therefore, the amount of calculation is greatly reduced.
