AbstractThe problems of salinity intrusion and pollution transport in the Chao Phya Estuary are investigated. The M.I.T. Transient Salinity Intrusion Model is used to study salinity intrusion in the estuary. The model consist s of two portions: the tidal hydraulics portion and the salinity intrusion portion. The tidal hydraulics portion of the model is verified by determining a roughness coefficient (Manning' s n=0.025 ) which reproduces the observed tidal elevations and phase lags along the estuary. The salinity intrusion portion of the model is calibrated using the salinity data of March 1967. Salinity intrusion in the Chao Phya Estuary is found to be dependent on the tide and river discharge. The problem of pollution transport is qualitatively analyzed. The movement of pollution in the estuary is al so found to be dependent on the tide and river discharge similar to the movement of salt.
