| Abstract | The pattern of changes in places of residence of households in the low-income population newly accommodated in the public housing sites of the National Housing Authority at Bonkai, Din Daeng and Huay Kwang has been studied in relation to the workplace of the applicant for housing. The results show that t he relocation of the applicants' places of residence to Bonkai, which is centrally placed in Bangkok, has resulted in an average reduction in the distance per household head to his place of work of from 5.08 km to 4.48 km, and viewed collectively a reduction in commuting of 12% has occurred. In the case of Din Daeng and Huay Kwang on the outskirts of the city the corresponding changes in distances are increases from 5.15 to 5.59 km and from 7.01 to 8.21 km respectively, with increases in commuting of 8. 5% and 15. 64% respectively. It is recommended that the National Housing Authority should try to open up numerous small housing sites within the city, and allocate housing units with regard to the applicants' , workplaces in order to reduce the burden of commuters on public transport systems. |
