| Abstract | In this study, satellite imagery from VIIRS and MODIS datasets was utilized to analyze the development patterns in Telangana, specifically focusing on urban, suburban, and rural growth since the state's formation in 2015. The VIIRS images were systematically processed in Google Earth Engine, consolidating annual image collections into single images that represent total radiance per pixel per year. This approach allowed the differentiation of light emission changes in classified areas—urban, suburban, and rural—providing insights into regional development dynamics.Additionally, the study targeted 19 industrial zones identified as part of the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC), covering significant acreage dedicated to industrial use. Using spatial data transformed from KML to shapefile formats, the temporal radiance values were extracted, and a time-series analysis was conducted for each industrial park. The consolidated data from these zones illustrated a notable increase in nighttime light emissions post-2015, indicating robust industrial growth.Overall, the multi-dataset approach revealed that while there was a significant increase in light emissions, particularly in suburban areas, the land cover as per MODIS data remained stable, suggesting that the light increase was not accompanied by large-scale land use change. This study underscores the complexity of regional development and the utility of satellite imagery in urban planning and policymaking. |
