| Abstract | The rainfall - runoff relationship for three tributeries (Siran, Haro, and Soan Rivers) in the upper catchment of the Indus river were derived using the SSARR (Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir regulation model, developed by U.S. Army Engineering Division, North Pacific, Portland, Oregon) and Tank model (developed by Professor Sugawara, Japan). These basins were steep so there was no backwater of flooding in the plains. Channel characteristics of the Indus river were also determined using both the models. Daily records of rainfall and pan evaporation were used to determine the basin and channel characteristics by comparing the computed flow and adjusting the parameters by trial and error method to get good agreement between two sets of flows. The basin characteristics (hydrological and meteorological characteristics and topography) are unique for a river basin and are usually not time dependent. So with determined basin characteristics, flow could be predicted using rainfall and evaporation as input to the model. It was found that flow from whole basin could be predicted using the sub-basin characteristics. It was seen that low flows could be better produced by SSARR model but for high flows the performance of SSARR and Tank models was nearly same. |
