| Abstract | A pneumatic conveying system failed to achieve the capacity claimed for it by the maker. This study was carried on to find where and how the capacity was lost within the system. The relationship between the conveying rate and the static pressure both at the nozzles and the exhauster was found. The exhauster performance characteristic was measured and compared with the original claimed ability. After measuring the terminal velocity of the transported grain and comparing it with the predicted value, the pressure drop across each section in the system could be theoretically predicted. The values were then compared with the actual measured values. This comparison and the pressure drop distribution among all sections in the system indicated the weak points of the system to be modified. During the study, an orifice meter was designed and used as an air flow measuring device. The performance characteristic of the positive displacement blower was found to differ greatly from that claimed. Too much flexible pipe was used in the system which contributed about 80% of the pressure drop in the multiphase section and the location of the flexible sections had not been made so as to avoid the acceleration zone. |
