AbstractFour ponds of dimensions 2x2x0.4, 2x2x0.6, 2x2xl, and 2x2xl meters namely Pl, P2, P3 and P4 respectively were constructed on the forecourt of the AIT Research centre and successfully operated as a first step towards the storage of solar energy. Sea salt (Sodium Chloride) was used to produce the desired density gradient at the pond needed to suppress convection. Pond P4 contained water only with no salt added. The bottom of the ponds were blackened with. Asphalt in pond Pl, and with cement and Charcoal in the other three ponds. The density at the bottom of the ponds (Pl, P2, P3) was 1.0993 gm/cc and at the top 0.998 gm/cc. The maximum temperature recorded at the bottom of the pond Pl was 56oc, at the bottom of pond P2 54°c, at the bottom of pond P3 46°C, and at the bottom of pond P4 34.s0 c. The observed efficiencies of the ponds between 12 noon and 2 pm (increment of energy stored in the pond divided by the incoming solar energy over that period) were found to be approximately 37% in the pond Pl, 39% in the pond P2, 32% in the pond P3, and 28% in the pond P4. In a separate experiment the temperature rise in a thin water filled plastic bag resting on a black surface was observed. The maximum temperature recorded in the plastic bag was 70°C with insulation and 61°c without insulation at the bottom of the bag. The observed efficiency of the bag between 12 noon and 2 pm was found to be approximately 35% with insulation and 22% without insulation respectively at the bottom of the bag.
