AbstractThe design of a simple manual soybean seeder developed from a conventional wooden point stick is presented. Two different prototypes were fabricated. Prototype 1 consisted of two main parts viz. body and sliding valve. The lower end of the seeder was pushed into soil and the sliding valve was manually operated to release seeds into the hole made by pushing the seeder body. This prototype encountered problems, of wet soil plugging the seeder opening and also the seed used to get sheared by getting trapped between the valve and body. To overcome these problems a second prototype was built having a long handle, sliding valve, soil opener; sliding tube and a metering device. In this model the valve and metering device operated automatically associated with the seeder movement. Tests with two different metering devices e.g. roller metering device and sliding plate metering device, were conducted in rice stubble field and cultivated field. The sowing rate of soyb an seeds by using this type of seeder was about 0.1 hectare per day. It was also shown that the theoretical seeding rate for this type of seeder is 0.21 hectare per day.
