AbstractThis study investigates the seismic performance of a typical gravity-load-designed (GLD) residential building located in Yangon, Myanmar, which lacks proper seismic design considerations. A four-story reinforced concrete building was modeled and analyzed using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NLTHA) in ETABS, subjected to three ground motions scaled according to the Myanmar National Building Code (MNBC 2020) spectrum. Under code-level seismic inputs, the building demonstrated limited plastic hinge development and acceptable inter-story drift, corresponding to a Life Safety (LS) performance level in the X-direction and between LS and Collapse Prevention (CP) in the Y-direction. However, when the ground motions were amplified, drift ratios exceeded CP thresholds, and a soft-story mechanism developed at the ground level. While column plastic rotations stayed within allowable deformation limits, the overall seismic response revealed insufficient global performance under severe shaking. These findings underscore the seismic vulnerability of GLD structures and emphasize the urgent need for retrofitting measures and stricter enforcement of seismic design codes in Myanmar.
