AbstractA theoretical investigation of the mechanical characteristics of non-bonded pre-stressed precast joints using high tensile steel wire, is made. So far the analysis of pre-stressed non-bonded members is the problem which is not solved completely due to the fact that change in steel strain is not equal t o the change in concrete strain at the location of steel. Using different strain distributions to concrete portion and the steel wire and by the use of energy principle the relationship of the rigidity and deflection of the assembled system of precast members were constructed theoretically. Experiments were carried out for the verification of theoretical investigation. The results obtained theoretically was found to be in close agreement with those obtained from experiment. Results obtained from both theoretical investigation and from experiments showed that in case of non-bonded prestressed precast joints, there is a loading point after which rotation of the joint and deflection of the non bonded member suddenly increase very rapidly. Prior to this loading, the rotation of t he joint and deflection of the non-bonded member is negligibly small. The theoretically derived relationship between rotation and moment of joint is applicable to the further analysis of so jointed pre- stressed precast concrete frames.
