AbstractThe purpose of this investigation is to determine the exit-gradient and pressure distribution on a dam or barrage having a level foundation with a row of sheet piles located at the heel and toe of the structure. This hydraulic structure is considered to rest on a homogeneous and isotropic porous medium of infinite depth. No analytic solution exists for the exit-gradient and uplift pressure for the case in which the two rows of sheet piles penetrate the medium to different depths. An electric analog model was therefore used to determine the uplift force and exit-gradient for these conditions. The net uplift force was obtained by integrating the pressure distribution over the base of the structure. The accuracy of the results were confirmed by comparing experimentally-determined values, for conditions in which the sheet piles were of equal length, with theoretically predicted results. For unsymmetric cases the experimental results were confirmed with those obtained theoretically from a numerical solution of the Laplace equation. Design curves were prepared in dimensionless form relating the dependent variables consisting of the uplift force and exit-gradient, with the geometry of the structure and the difference between the upstream and downstream heads.
