AbstractThe finite difference method is used to determine the stress distribution in one-story shear walls with rectangular openings. The biharmonic equation of elasticity and the boundary conditions are expressed in terms of finite differences and the resulting sets of equations solved using an IBM 1620 digital computer. The presence of the openings makes the problem highly indeterminate. The method of superposition used in this study can be adapted to a great many problems involving internal boundaries.
