AbstractThe problem of the dynamic response of a structure subjected to earthquake ground motion has been formulated in a manner which permits separation of the characteristics of the particular structures from the characteristics of the earthquake. The expression involving the characteristics of the earthquake has been called the "response spectrum" of the earthquake which is shown to be a plot of the maximum dynamic response of a simple responding system against its period. A modified Manila earthquake of April 3, 1965 was analyzed using the numerical integration technique with a finite time of 0.025 sec, which is one quarter of the smallest system period considered. The results are presented in tabular and graphical form, from which the idealized spectrum is drawn. It is found that damping is a very important parameter in the analysis; a small increase in the percentage of critical damping, X, greatly reduces the structural response.
