AbstractTests of sixteen reinforced concrete inverted Tee girders are I reported. The girders were subjected to two pairs of symmetrically located loads applied to the flanges of the girders, simulating the reactions of precast beams supported by the girders. It was found that transverse reinforcement at the top of the flange must be provided to prevent failure of the flanges before the flexural strength of the girder is reached. The strength of the girder flanges was a function of the amount of transverse and longitudinal reinforcement placed in the flange, the concrete strength, and the bending moment in the girder produced by the applied loads. Behavior of the test beams and the modes of failure are described in qualitative terms. Suggestions for further experimental studies are made to permit the formulation of design criteria for the strength of the flanges of precast girders supporting precast beams.
