AbstractEight laterite samples from various parts of Thailand were collected and the physical properties of each sample were evaluated. Two samples having different properties in various aspects were chosen for detailed study. The purpose of this research is to determine the swelling characteristics of compacted lateritic soils when soaked in various kinds of pore fluid: distilled water, NaCl and CaCl2 solutions. The swelling characteristics were investigated by two methods: the swell-pressure test and the heave test. In the swell-pressure test the pressure developed at constant volume by the compacted sample upon access to the several kinds of pore fluid was measured. In the heave test, the percentage of volume change was determined for each compacted sample (under a surcharge of 1 Ib/sq in.) upon access to the same pore fluids. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the swelling characteristics of compacted laterite samples immersed in various pore fluids were different; no unique relationship between the swelling characteristics and the salt concentration in the soaking solution was found to exist.
