AbstractIn this study, the current situation of the automotive industry in ASEAN, and qualitative analysis for developing the parts industry are discussed. Demands and registration of motorvehicles in ASEAN countries are used to determine the demand of motorvehicle parts. The problems and obstacles encountered for developing the parts industry are identified. A pre-feasibility study for manufacturing standard automotive electrical equipment sets comprised of: alternators, distributors, ignition coils, starters, and voltage regulators of the same quantity for each of the ASEAN countries are conducted. Regional cooperation through complementarity agreement is considered for developing the parts industry. A multiproduct mathematical model based on least cost approach is suggested as a basic step in implementing the regional cooperation. Two alternatfor securing the distribution of benefits in the cooperation are introduced: (a) Requirement that the total value of products allocated to be produced in any country shall at least equal to a proportion of one fifth of the total value of products included in the agreement. (b) Requirement that the total value of products allocated to be produced in any country shall at least equal to a proportion of the total value of demands of that country on all products included in the agreement.
