| Abstract | Citizens’ adoption of e-government services remains a critical challenge for many countries. In response to the growing trend in social media user bases, governments are increasingly implementing citizen-centric social media initiatives to encourage its adoption. However, the role of citizens' social media usage (SMU) in influencing e government adoption remains understudied. This study addresses this gap by exploring its direct influence while examining the moderating and mediating roles of psychological factors associated with SMU, thus, providing deeper insights into the adoption process. The objective of this study is to investigate how citizens’ SMU influences adoption of e-government services by examining its direct effects as well as the mediating and moderating roles of psychological factors. This study proposes a conceptual model of SMU and e-government adoption based on extant literature. This model combines two major constructs of the technology acceptance model (TAM) with the psychological factors commonly linked with SMU, including self-esteem, technostress, computer anxiety, preference for online social interaction, and neuroticism. The study employs partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) to data from 519 Indian citizens, and finds empirical support for 12 out of the 17 proposed relationships. Results indicate that citizens’ SMU directly enhances their perceptions of usefulness and ease of use of e-government services. This, in turn, strengthens their intention of use, highlighting its role in building comfort with these services. The findings also support to the role of social media-linked psychological factors on adoption decisions. The findings extend the literature on e-government adoption and offer valuable insights for researchers and policymakers in India and similar geographies, to improve e-government services and public acceptance. |
