AbstractTwo scale models of prestressed pseudo slabs were tested and the results analysed to study their load distribution behaviour and to formulate some empirical expressions or rules for evaluation of the elastic parameters of such multibeam bridge decks. Bridge Slab 1 incorporated precast prestressed solid box-sections with shear keys of in-situ concrete and varied amounts of unbonded mild steel in the transverse direction. Bridge Slab 2 consisted of precast prestressed solid box-sections, wider than those of Slab 1, with shallower shear keys and shear dowels. The slab closely conformed to a form of construction adopted by the Concrete Products and Aggregate Co., Ltd., Bangkok. Results for Slab 1 showed that the mild steel reinforcement in the transverse direction has no effect on load distribution behaviour up to the elastic design loads, beyond which it does contribute to the transverse moment of resistance of the slab. The results of this slab > enabled the formulation of definite rules for evaluating the flexural and torsional parameters for such slabs. In the case of Slab 2 it was found that the depth of shear key was inadequate for transference of moment between the longitudinal members. Application of articulated plate theory for analysis of this type of slab is more reasonable, although the resulting design will be somewhat on the conservative side.
