| Abstract | This study attempts to achieve insight in the extent in which women find employment in village based on small-scale industry and the service sector. One of the objectives is to give suggestion for improving the economic and social situation of women in rural areas. The fieldwork was carried out in Amphoe San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai for a period of three months. In this research, types of small-scale industry and services are analized in order to find the priorities in employment as perceived by the women, Job opportunities and attitudes of women towards different types are also measured. The contribution of women to productive efforts is expressed in terms of monetary and time value. It is found that there is a tendency that rural women become more and more involved in work outside their household. The percentage of monetary contribution of women, engaged in small-scale industry and the service sector, is higher than that of women working only in agricultural sector. The most important reason that prevents women from employment in some jobs is lack of skill. Training therefore will give women better job opportunity, Furthermore, problems as perceived by women give indications for improvement of the status of women as the local level. |
