Abstract Attempts were made to culture Tilapia nilotica and Carp (Puntius gonionotus) in monoculture and Tilapia and Catfish (Pangasius sutchi) in polyculture in fish ponds receiving stabilization pond effluents. The study was divided into two parts which were carried out for two months. Diurnal tests of pH value, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide were performed at the end of the study period. With a stocking density of 16 fish/m2, a yield of 41 metric tons and 11.7 metric tons per hectare per annum were estimated for Tilapia and Carp, respectively. The total yield of Tilapia and catfish in polyculture with a stocking density of 16 fish/m2 (Tilapia-8, Catfish-8), were estimated to be 29.6 metric tons per hectare per annum, which shows that the total yield in monoculture is about one and half times greater than the total yield in polyculture. Economic analyses of Tilapia and Carp in monoculture and Tilapia and Catfish in polyculture were done, which indicated that Carp would not be attractive for investment. Tilapia in monoculture was found to be more attractive to investors than polyculture. An economic analysis of oxidation-fish pond system indicated that the operating costs of waste treatment could be markedly reduced or even turned into a profit for the community involved.
