AbstractA meter was developed to measure the individual discharge rates of a sand-water mixture transported in a vertical, circular, closed conduit 0. 574 inches in diameter. The sand used in the investigation had a specific gravity of 2.62 and varied in grain size from 0.0232 in. to 0.0117 in. The individual flow rates were determined from the simultaneous solution of the meter equations which were derived from the application of the energy and momentum principles. The solution of these equations required information concerning the meter geometry, physical properties of the slurry components and piezometric head at three positions along the meter. The design of the meter was similar to that developed by Norbert L. Ackermann and Chaleo Niyomthai, the principal difference being that the present meter was constructed so that friction loss could be greatly reduced and possibly eliminated as a significant variable in the meter equations. The conduit velocities in the work by Ackermann and Chaleo varied between 1. 03 and 3.75 ft /sec, while in the present study the conduit velocities varied between 3.60 and 9.25 ft/sec.
