AbstractThe depth and width of a scour hole created by a vertical, two-dimensional water jet striking a horizontal sand bed was investigated. Data obtained from laboratory tests confirmed the validity of the assumptions that were used as a basis for formulating a model to describe the mechanics of the scour phenomenon. This model enabled a theoretical equation to be derived describing the cavity depth in terms of hydraulic characteristics of the jet and the physical properties of the fluid and bed material. The model was based on the assumptions that the cohesionless sand bed behaves like' a fluid at high cavity or scour depths and that the hydraulic characteristics of the jet in the area of the scour hole are closely approximated by the hydraulic characteristics of a submerged jet in a semi-infinite fluid. In order to establish with certainty the conditions under which this scour model applies, additional laboratory tests are required using different grain size characteristics of the bed and different specific gravities of the liquid jet.
