AbstractThis research was conducted, to investigate the physical behavior of clay soil stabilized with marl, as compared to stabilization with lime. The clay and marl used were analyzed for chemical composition. Clay was mixed with lime or marl in separate tests at 0, 2, 5» 7> 10, and 12 percent by weight. Atterberg limits, specific gravity, classification, and compaction characteristics of the clay and the marl and lime stabilized samples were determined. Unconfined compressive strength and CBR tests were utilized to determine the strength properties of the stabilized soil samples. The results of laboratory testing indicate a reduction in plasticity index when lime is added to clay. The strength properties of the mixture were found to vary directly with the amount of lime added. The cementing process in lime stabilization was found to develop gradually as time in¬ creases. The reductions in density and swell which occur when lime is added to clay are significant. Physical properties of clay-marl mixtures improved to a smaller degree than observed for clay-lime samples. The density of the soil mass increased with the amount of marl used; an expected reduction in the plastic range of clay-marl mixes did not occur. The strength properties of clay, as measured by the CBR value, decreased rapidly at high percentages of marl. The swell of submerged clay-marl specimens was undesirably great.
