| Abstract | A test of a reinforced concrete hypar shell was performed to determine the applicability of membrane theory for such structures. The shell was loaded by air pressure and this system turned out to be very efficient for its uniformity and simplicity of operation. Experimental results within the elastic range of the shell were compared with membrane theory and an approximate solution. It was found that the interior pa^t of the shell followed membrane theory closely but near the edges bending and direct stresses were present in addition to membrane stresses. The bending moment calculated from the approximate solution compared closely with the experimental bending moment. It was also found that though bending stresses developed in the shell in addition to membrane stresses, the elastic limit predicted by membrane theory compared closely with the actual. The collapse load was 4jtimes that predicted by membrane theory. |
