AbstractThis study is concerned with the scheduling of express train operations in the West railway transportation corridor of Taiwan. The railway network will be electrified in the year 1980 in order to provide the capacity required by the increasing demand with high level of service. A computer model, written in General Purpose Simulation System language, has been developed in order to derive the optimal schedule for the express train operations with which the traffic demand is justified and the queues of trains formed at points along the route are eliminated. In connection with the computer model developed, a shifting method is adopted as a means to achieve the optimal schedule.
