AbstractThe thesis is an examination of the relation between μ/M and 1/αM in the Gumbel equation (information in PDF file) where x is the flood magnitude corresponding to the returnperiod μ, α is the mean flow, and p and a are parameters of the flood distribution. The study is based on an analysis of 136 flood series extending altogether over 6888 years, the series selected for analysis covering a wide range of geographic and climatic conditions, from tropical to sub-polar. The relationship between μ/M and 1/αM is shown to be statistical rather than mathematical. In consequence the quotient 1/ap was rejected as a flood classification index in favour of the ratio of the 100 year flood to the mean flow (xlOO/M) which is related to μ/M , 1/αM and 1/αμ. For a particular range of xlOO/M values there are definite limits to μ/M , 1/αM and 1/αμ. All four parameters are related to catchment characteristics, notably drainage area and surface storage, thereby enabling floods to be estimated for ungauged as well as gauged streams when the correlations are known for the locality under consideration.
