AbstractA procedure is developed for the comparative studies of prestressed and conventional reinforced concrete highway bridges in Thailand. The studies are concerned with the economic comparison. The first cost or cost of initial construction and quantities of materials are required for this purpose. Complete highway bridge drawings are needed to estimate the quantities of materials and cost. These were furnished by the Royal Thai Highway Department and the Concrete Products and Aggregate Company. The studies deal mainly with the superstructures of highway bridges in Thailand. Tables and diagrams are developed for the different material and labor costs in various parts of Thailand. The use of these tables and diagrams are demonstrated by typical examples. The diagrams can be applied for other kinds of construction. Recommendations are given for the economic types of prestressed or reinforced concrete highway bridge to be used for various spans.
