AbstractThis thesis reports the results of a laboratory investigation on the effects of rate of strain on the strength of saturated marine clay. Characteristics of stress-strain curves and the rheological behavior of undisturbed saturated marine clay were investigated. Unconfined compression tests at various rates of strain comprised the principal laboratory tests. The relationships between unconfined compressive strength and the rate of strain, and the relationships between maximum unconfined compressive strength and void ratio, are reported. The results of tests indicate that saturated marine clay is a viscoplastic material. At a particular void ratio, the ultimate shear strength increases with an increase in the rate of strain. This effect is entirely caused by variations in the manner of viscous flow. Void ratio also plays an important role in the manner of variation of shear strength. Yield limit, obtained when the rate of strain approaches zero, should be the strength criterion in designing structures to be founded upon marine clay, because viscous flow of the foundation material results in settlement and deformation of the supporting medium.
