AbstractScale models of composite and pseudo-slab bridge decks were constructed and tested under varying amounts of transverse prestress to study the load distribution properties under concentrated loads, which simulate the effect of traffic wheels. The composite slab consists of pretensioned tee-sections with an in-situ concrete topping, while the pseudo-slab consists of pretensioned I-sections with unsymmetrical flanges and in-situ concrete filling. Transverse prestress was applied at fractions of 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and the full value of the required transverse prestress as called for by elastic analysis. Results show that the stiffness of the bridge, as measured by its torsional parameter α, drops off abruptly at transverse prestress below one quarter of the full transverse prestress and increases gradually at values above this limit. An attempt is made to establish relationships between the elastic parameters of composite and pseudo-slab bridges for use in practical design problems.
