| Abstract | This thesis presents and discusses the stress-strain behaviour and shear strength characteristics of loose and medium dense Bangkok sand under four different applied stress paths e.g. undrained, fully drained (constant cell pressure), constant stress ratio and constant mean normal stress and dense sand under fully drained stress path. The samples were collected from AIT site from a depth of 15.0-23.0 m. The samples were sieved by wet method and the materials passing No. 10 U.S. sieve (2.0 mm) and retained on No. 200 U.S. sieve (0.074 mm) were taken for research. The pre-shear consolidation pressures used were 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 & 80 lb/in2 (69.0, 138 .0, 207.0, 276.0, 345.0, 414. 0, 483.0 and 552.0 kN/mZ) and the samples were sheared under strain controlled condition. Smooth end platens were used and sleeve penetrations were taken into account. Comparisons of the results between CID test results on loose, medium and dense; CIU test on loose and medium; CIU, CID and constant p test on loose as well as medium sand were made. Finally, the prediction of shear and volumetric strain are made on loose sand in drained and constant p tests and compared with those obtained by the experiments. |
