AbstractThis thesis presents the results of an investigation of the undrained shear strength on different failure planes of soft Rangsit Clay. Ten inch diameter undisturbed samples were taken from 4.0 m to 6.0 m depth below the existing ground level at a site at the Asian Institute of Technology. UU triaxial tests and direct shear box tests, strain controlled, were carried out on five different orientations. A series of in-situ vane tests were performed by using different rectangular and diamond shaped vanes. It was found that the undrained shear strength of soft Rangsit Clay varies with the orientation of the failure plane and the way in which the clay is brought to failure. The results of the UU triaxial tests and the direct shear box tests showed approximately the same trend of variation of the undrained shear strength. But the results from the in-situ vane tests did not compare well with the laboratory results.
