AbstractExperimental studies were made to investigate the effects of repeated loading on the stress strain characteristics of Bangkok Subsoils under undrained condition in the conventional triaxial apparatus as well as under drained condition in the odometer. The clay and sand samples were taken from the AIT campus at Rangsit, 42 km from the Bangkok City. The behavior of all soils in the traixial apparatus are nearly similar. Both for clays and sands, critical stress levels are found to occur below which the samples achieve a non-failure state under repetitive loading. However for stresses above the critical stresses failure is found to occur under repeated loading. The variations of total shear strain, irrecoverable shear strain and recoverable strain with repeated cycles of loading are studied in detail. Also, the development of pore pressure with respect to repeated loading is also investigated for both clays and sands. Drained repeated loading tests were performed on Weathered Clay, Soft Clay and Stiff Clay in the odometer. At low consolidation pressures below the maximum past pressure, the increase in axial strain and the decrease in void ratio under repeated loading are small. However, at higher consolidation pressures above the maximum past pressure, notable increase·· in axial strain and remarkable decrease in void ratio were noted. At any identical .consolidated pressure, the total axial strain for Soft Clay was 'higher than that for other clays while Stiff Olay had the smallest total axial strain.
