AbstractDuring the past decade or so. much attention has been given to the problem of adsorption and dispersion in porous media flow. With few exceptions, most of these studies have been concerned with either one or the other; quantitative investigations in which both phenomena have been taken into account simultaneously have been few. The present study includes experimental work involving water flow— ing downwards through a bed of glass beads in a plexiglass column. It was observed that mass transfer between the liquid and the solid phases occured for tests involving a step function addition of methylene blue tracer at the top of the packed bed. Mathematical expressions concerned with such phenomena have been employed to express the experimental data acquired in the study. Ala though such expressions have proven to be too complicated to apply in the most general sense, special case solutions indicate that the theory seems to describe such dispersiona adsorption phenomena quite well.
