AbstractThe research was conducted at Pilot-Scale to study the practical applicability of using bamboo as tube settles in water treatment systems. The settling unit was specially designed to cope with the parameters at various levels. Those parameters were tube length, tube diameter, flow rate and inclination angle. It was found that bamboo tube settler could be used as well as PVC tube settler. The removal efficiency as high as 93.8% was achieved with tube length of 120 cm, tube diameter of 6.3 cm and flow rate of 2.5 m3 / m2-h at 45° of inclination angle. Statistical relationships for predicting the efficiency of removal was also developed. Cost comparison at equal capacity of 1000 m3/day showed that the settling tank equipped with bamboo as tube settler cost about one half of the conventional sedimentation tank and required land area of only one-third of the same sedimentation tank. Costs of construction and land requirement are thus reduced to a minimum.
