AbstractThe effects of mixed liquor volatile suspended solid on COD removal and DO concentration of rotating biological filters were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Two RBF units having equal size of aerobic chamber were constructed - one with hopper and the other without hopper arrangement. MLVSS in the unit with hopper was normally less and arrangements were made to keep it to a minimum. On the other hand the higher concentration of MLVSS is the unit without hopper was increased further by sludge recirculation from clarifier. Comparative study of these two units under the conditions mentioned above revealed the effects of MLVSS. Synthetic waste having a COD value of 1,000 - 1,500 mg/l was used and the temperature was controlled at 30°c.
