AbstractThis research is an attempt to study the entire energy system of Thailand. The nation's energy system is complex and it involves many disciplines such as sociological, economic and technical problems. However, intangible factors are not considered and no attempt is made to quantify them. Emphasis in this study of the energy system is on the determination of an optimal energy allocation from supply origins to consuming sectors with respect to a number of objective functions. One of the objective function considered here is the minimum over-all costs of energy consumption in the energy system. A mathematical model, a linear programming formulation, is used for the intended optimization. The model is sufficiently general that it can be applied to any energy system of any level of disaggregation - a factory, an industry, or even a nation as a whole. All possible energy forms can be considered and specific characteristics of these energy forms namely interfuel substitutability (interchangeable among them for example liquefied petroleum .gas and electricity for cooking), and efficient utilization. In this study, three economic sectors (e.g. residential and commercial, industry and transportation) within each of five disaggregated regions (e.g. metropolitan area, Central, North, North-East, and South region) are energy consuming sectors and their demands must always be met by various supplies of energy forms. All energy forms are considered except for those that are non-substitutable by others such as aviation fuel and those that are non-economical to be transported to other places and thus are consumed near their origin such as bagasse and paddy husk. Other objective function, apart from the minimum cost objective can be studied under linear programming framework and it can be minimum of pollutants emission for example. The model is intended for being used as a tool in evaluating technologies and policies regarding energy allocation matters, as well as the determination of an optimal configuration of all energy re sources with respect to costs.
