AbstractA liquid jet is emitted from a submerged plane nozzle in a direction normal to the interface created by a heavier immiscible liquid. The impinging liquid jet deforms the interface, creating a cavity of a certain shape and size. The aim of the present study has been to relate the size of the cavity to the various jet parameters and liquid properties. The cavity depth, width and lip height were measured. A water jet impinging on carbon tetrachloride, and an oil jet impinging on water were studied. The experimental data were analyzed in terms of analytical models and the results were quite consistent with these models. - However, some discrepancy was observed between the water-carbon tetrachloride tests and the oil-water tests. Furthermore, the liquid-liquid experiments carried out in the present study gave results which were somewhat different from results obtained in previous tests using an air jet impinging on water. It is believed that viscosity and surface tension effects are responsible for these discrepancies. Nevertheless, the results of this investigation enable one to determine the cavity depth, cavity width and lip height with a fair degree of accuracy. Such results may prove useful in connection with the phenomenon of scouring of erodible material by liquid jets.
