AbstractLaboratory tests on two scale models of a prestressed composite slab bridge deck have been performed to study the distribution of concentrated loads at elastic conditions and beyond the working load. The deck consisted of pretensioned inverted tee-sections with an infilling of in-situ concrete. The experimental results were compared with theoretical values calculated by using the methods of analysis of Morice and Little and of Hendry and Jaeger. Favourable agreement between theoretical and experimental values were observed up to the calculated working load for both central and eccentric load positions, and considerable dif¬ ferences at regions distant from the loads were noted. The effect of reducing the transverse prestress from the value called for by elastic design was also studied by providing the second model with a prestress equal to half of that in the first model. Although these results may not be conclusive, they indicated a poorer distribution of loads than was observed with the first model.
